Wheelchair-bound woman seeks help for servant

A Palmerston North woman is asking for the public to help get her dog – which she relies on for day-to-day tasks – back to full health.

Pam Allen, who is in a wheelchair, said her dog Rusty had started to develop gunk in his ear a few weeks ago.

A visit to the vet revealed Rusty had a burst eardrum. A growth had also calcified onto his jaw, which was causing the dog pain, Ms Allen said.

Rusty, who is 9 years old, helps Ms Allen by picking up items off the floor which she cannot reach from her wheelchair.

He could also put on and take off shoes and socks, and could even open doors for his owner.

But since his jaw started playing up, he could no longer pick up very small objects, and found it hard to pick up larger objects.

The labrador huntaway cross was on drugs to manage the pain and any possible infections, but they were slowing him down, Ms Allen said.

Bills for the medication and vet visits had also started to add up.

"I just spent $1000 which I haven't got ... it's a lot of money for someone who lives on ACC," she said.

Rusty needed surgery to remove the growth.

While vets had said it was not life-threatening, it needed to be taken care of before it got worse, she said.

But paying for the surgery was too expensive for Ms Allen to do on her own, and she was asking for the public to help.

"It will cost me about $5000 ... we're talking big dollars," she said.

She was not sure what would happen if she could not raise enough money for his treatment.

Ms Allan said that while she needed Rusty to help her around the house, she just wanted to see him "running around like he should be".
